Build a small archive before converting everything

1. Keep originals/ unchanged and record who owns each publication.
2. If Publisher is available, export reference PDFs there first. Name those copies reference-pdfs/.
3. Export your PubHarbor reading copies to reviewed-exports/. Pro is required for professional exports.
4. Record page-count, text, font and image differences in the review checklist. Keep unresolved files out of the completed archive.
5. Open the PDF in a second reader and test searching for a known phrase.

An installed perpetual Publisher edition does not necessarily stop running when support ends. Confirm your licence and platform; PubHarbor is for viewing and conversion on Apple devices, not ongoing Publisher editing.

Download a reusable archive inventory

Start with a small batch, record what each file needs, and mark an export as reviewed only after checking it. The blank text checklist is free to adapt. Keep customer names and publication details in your own copy; this website does not receive the inventory.

Choose the next action by the intended use

• Read or share an old publication: retain the original and make a checked PDF reading copy.
• Keep editing a publication: plan a supported authoring workflow. A viewer does not replace page-layout editing.
• Send a publication to a printer: confirm the printer’s required PDF settings and proofing process. A readable conversion is not a guarantee of print-ready output.

A practical review gate for every important export

1. Confirm the number and order of pages, including blank pages that affect a booklet.
2. Read a dense page and check for overflow, missing characters and changed line breaks.
3. Compare image crops, layering and colours with the reference.
4. Review any font substitution, linked-image and embedded-object warnings.
5. Search the exported PDF for a known phrase and reopen it in a second reader.
6. Record unresolved differences and keep that file out of the reviewed group.

A successful export proves that a PDF was produced. The checks above establish whether that PDF is useful for your particular publication.

If you still have access to Publisher

Export your reference copies from the original authoring environment while it is available. Microsoft documents the PDF export workflow in its Publisher PDF guide. Keep the editable PUB files too. For continuing edits, Microsoft’s retirement guidance describes migration options and notes that PDF-to-Word conversion can change layout.

What PubHarbor does and does not replace

PubHarbor provides local viewing and conversion on supported Apple devices. It is useful for checking a received file or preparing reading copies from an archive. It does not provide Publisher’s authoring interface, guarantee identical rendering for every publication, or recover missing linked assets. Try representative files and read the compatibility notes before committing a large archive to the workflow.

Publisher retirement questions

When does Microsoft 365 lose Publisher?

Microsoft says subscribers will not be able to access Publisher after 1 October 2026.

When does support for perpetual Publisher end?

Microsoft says support for the perpetual version ends on 13 October 2026. An installed copy may continue working without support.

Should I throw away the original .pub?

No. Keep the untouched original beside a checked PDF reading copy; a PDF does not preserve Publisher editing.

Can PubHarbor edit a Publisher file?

No. PubHarbor is a viewer and archive converter; it does not create or modify Publisher files.

Is export included in the free preview?
